Tornado Warning Rocks Southern Florida

The National Weather Service in Miami, FL has issued what might just be the final tornado warning of 2009 at 10:27 EST Friday, December 18th.

Tornado Warning near Homestead, Florida

Tornado Warning near Homestead, Florida

The winter tornado event is not extremely uncommon in southern Florida, however it is expected that El Nino is playing a role with this specific event.  Latest ENSO discussions have forecast a moderately strong El Nino event this winter, comparable to the winter of 1998.  That year, the following spring brought several tornado outbreak events into the southern and central plains, such as the May 3rd, 1999 event in central Oklahoma.

If this is any indication of similarity between the 1998 and 2009 El Nino events, then we may just see a strong tornado season in the plains in the near future.  Other similarities between the two events are the below normal temps through much of the Midwest with several winter storms having already occurred in the past month.
