Hailing Supercell near Mullin, NE

Tour 4 was a rough week for storms, we only had a single chase day – Wednesday May 20th. We intercepted a supercell near Hyannis, NE that is otherwise known as the “Mullin Storm”. We stayed on the storm for several hours following it to Mullin, NE and then went south on Highway 97 for a pretty nasty ride through the core while it was producing hail between 1 and 2 inches in diameter.

There were a few severe warned cells in the extreme NW corner of Nebraska about an hour or so before our storm developed, the thought of running after them was tempting, but I stuck with my gut feeling on this one to just stay near Hyannis and it paid off. There were no hail reports from the early NW storms – despite the fact that those storms were well covered by chasers and spotters alike. Here is the storm report locations throughout for May 20th.
