The GFS is hinting on what could be a major event set to take place early next week in the Central Plains.
It appears that over the weekend mositure will start advecting into the plains from a Gulf of Mexico that is open for business. On Monday, the GFS is showing a negatively tilted trough being ejected across the plains bringing with it all the energy needed to turn several days of moisture advection into a widespread severe event.
The 132-hour GFS forecast for the surface shows a deeply backed wind field and a low-pressure center with a strong cold front moving into the plains. The same model run shows a very tight dryline extending from the Texas Panhandle into the Northern Plains and a negative tilted massive trough moving into the plains during the same forecast period.
Of course this is based on the GFS for a forecast period nearly 6-days away. So, the details will change – and they will change a lot by the time we move into the forecast period. But – if you’re unsure about what to do, you can always consult with the 8-Ball 8000 Forecasting Center.
